AARP Fraud Watch Network Shred-a-Thon April 28

Protect yourself from identity theft by safely shredding sensitive documents at Access Information Management Destruction Plants in West Hawaii on April 28. You can also help the hungry at the same time by bringing food donations.

AARP Hawaii and Access Corporation are sponsoring the free document shredding and food collection events in Kailua-Kona at 73-4164 Huli Koa Drive.

People can drive up and drop off up to two boxes of documents per vehicle occupant from 8 a.m. to noon. Bring donations of rice and canned goods or a check to benefit Hawaii’s hungry families through the Kona Food Basket.

Due to safety and traffic-flow concerns, people will not be allowed to get out of their car and boxes and bags will not be returned. Drop offs will be limited to two bags or boxes per vehicle. Walk-ups will not be allowed. Staples and paperclips do not need to be removed from documents.

Access Corporation requires a signed document release form before they will shred your documents. Forms can be downloaded here: https://bit.ly/2uSGZIF and must be signed before you drop off your papers.

‘OrchidGami’ free KDOC show and sale

The 36th annual Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club (KDOC) show and sale is 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Daifukuji Soto Mission Hall. The free event offers attendees a complimentary orchid boutonniere corsage while they last.

This year’s theme, “Conservation of Orchids Through Creativity,” illustrates how to display orchids using recycled materials and an unusual origami display of endangered North American orchids called “OrchidGami” by founding club member and historian Carol Zakahi.

In addition, there will be a guided tour through the on-site Orchid Grotto. The grotto demonstrates how to beautify a problematic space to be enjoyed from both inside and out.

Enjoy an elaborate and colorful display of live blooming cattleya, cymbidium, dendrobium, phalaenopsis, miltonia, vanda and more. Cameras are welcome.

Got growing questions? Veteran members staff a Q&A booth with expert advice on caring for orchids. The club boasts longtime members who have been growing orchids at different Kona elevations, Waimea and South Point.
